After plenty of NYC sweets & treats, it’s time for a Wednesday Wellness post. Ashely and I indulged in quite a few Diet Cokes and truffle fries, so maybe this post will make up for it?! ha!
Non-toxic beauty has been quite the buzzword/phrase the past few seasons. I dabbled in trying out some different brands and have surprisingly been quiet pleased! My personal goal isn’t to switch all my products or to only use non-toxic products each and every day. There’s also a huge difference between non-toxic and “natural,” but I’m not here to lecture! For more casual days or days I feel I’m going to be getting my makeup all over Maxi {say we are just going to the park or cuddling at home and I want to just freshen up} I like to incorporate more non-toxic options. I’ve also enjoyed just trying out and researching so I can see what I like in this sector of the beauty industry.
It was easiest to find eyeshadows I loved, then I found some great blushes, I even found a lovely tinted moisturizer that is non-toxic. However, lipsticks were quite the challenge! I purchased, ordered something new, purchased, repeat for months. My issue was that more non-toxic based lipsticks were very oil-based and had a sheer or bleeding effect on the lips. Ingredients like cocoa seed butter and castor oil are great, but in the end they caused my lipstick to look like I ate a greasy burger and had color smeared on my face.
I decided to just ignore looking for a non-toxic lipstick as I am all about balance in my purchasing choices and health. It wasn’t my goal to completely switch or even toss the products I already loved, so I didn’t feel like it was going to be a make or break issue. Back when I was living at our parents’ home I was scrolling Instagram and saw Annie Lawless post she launched a non-toxic liquid lipstick. I immediately screenshotted and sent to my friend Ashley saying we had to try these. I ordered 2 within a span of 5 minutes once I saw these were liquid lipsticks. Annie has really glamorous makeup {I’ve followed her for years!} so I knew she wouldn’t produce a lipstick that didn’t give the color payout I wanted.
I purchased the shades Cameron and Brad. I saw from Annie’s Instagram that she encouraged mixing colors, which I’m all about. Some liquid lipsticks do not play nice with others and blend, but because these have more natural ingredients and are considered a “soft matte” they definitely do.
Annie usually does a deeper color and a lighter color in the center of the pout and then blends. “Brad” is a mauve and “Cameron” is a light nude. Now on me, Cameron does come out a bit more warm toned but that’s just because I don’t really have warm undertones. With that being said, I do prefer to blend it.
After using these for about 3 months {and I still have product left in the tube!} I went ahead and purchased Jake which is called a bumblegum baby pink, however because I’m so fair it really just seems to be an exact dupe for MAC Snob on my lips! On Annie this looks nearly white, but for some reason on me it just looks like a typical pink shade- but that just goes to show how different shades look on skin tones. Their Instagram page shows wonderful swatches on their stories, if that helps you decide the shade for you.
So now that you can see I’m quite the fan, you may be curious as to why there is such an interest in non-toxic lipstick. This section of their site has a ton of great information and I personally like to have a mix in my makeup bag. I do really believe the cosmetic industry should be monitored more- I mean we essentially eat our lipstick. From licking our lips to our skin absorbing 64% of the chemicals in it, we are what we apply. There is definitely a factor there that makes me feel comfortable if a better option of lipstick gets on Maxi’s cheek when I kiss her. Also, for those that look for this, these products are cruelty free.
My overall thoughts? On my skin, these shades are extremely similar to how they look in the tube. If you have a deeper skin tone, definitely check out the swatches on their insta stories. Would I buy these if they weren’t non toxic? Absolutely. The ability these lipsticks have to blend is enough for me to want to purchase them. My only thing to note is you *must* exfoliate before you use! Like most liquid lipsticks, they will highlight any chapped parts on your lips.
Have you tried any non-toxic lipsticks?! What did you think?

Have you tried any Beauty Counter products?
Hi Leslie! I have! I love their palettes and powder products! xo, Katey
I love that sweater! Right now I am all about comfy sweaters that look effortlessly chic especially with the weather changing to spring!
Love this post!! After being diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago and finding out how much bad stuff is in cosmetics and everything we put on our bodies I switched everything I use to non-toxic! It’s been so fun replacing everything because I love makeup!! Thanks for posting about this, definitely going to check these out! 🙂
Oh my goodness, Brittany! I’m SO so sorry for your diagnosis!! I hope you are doing well! xo
Hi Katey! Would love to read more about the non-toxic blushes and eyeshadows you’ve found! I’m definitely on the hunt for cleaner makeup products, and loved this post!

What is the tinted moisturizer that you found? I try to use as much non-toxic products as possible!
Hi Whitney! I use Beautycounter! They have a Dew Skin and then light foundation, but honestly both are SUCH light coverage [lightest out of anything I’ve ever, ever used on the market as it’s meant to be buildable] so they are meant to be combined together and with that you get a tinted moisturizer/super light foundation look. I apply Dew Skin like a moisturizer then their foundation [which is really a tinted moisturizer] over. I’ve loved it! I hope that makes sense! xo
Oh my goodness!! I have slowly been switching my makeup to non-toxic products! I have never heard of this brand, but want to buy a couple now! Which color would you say is the lightest nude they?! Also, love your blog! I have been following for years!
Hi Holly Jo! It would definitely be Cameron or Leo! If you have cool undertones go with Cameron, if you have warm I’d go with Leo! xo
Super excited to try this brand! There are so many nontoxic products popping up and I, too hope the US does a little
But more regulating. It’s so hard to switch from
Products we love and know work for our skin that maybe are “regular” products! Can’t wait to order these lippies ???? Great post! Xo
Thanks Katey! I love Beautycounter’s color intense lipsticks! They were part of their holiday line so aren’t available now. But they just launched one called Beautycounter red that is GORGEOUS. You should check it out! It would look gorgeous on you.
Do you mind sharing what non-toxic eyeshadows and powders you are loving? Thanks
Hi Katelyn! I love Beautycounter! Their Oceans palette is stunning! xo
