Tula Acne Gel Review- Before and After

Have blemishes? Me too! Today is all about the new Tula Acne Gel. I’ve endearingly been calling this week “beauty boot camp” as I’ve shared anti-aging patches on Insta Stories, a favorite drugstore shampoo, I’ll share skincare for oily skin later this week….and today?! Today I’m sharing the Tula Acne Gel I’ve been learning about for over a year!

Naturally, one of my favorite parts of blogging is product testing. I get the opportunity to test products before they hit the market and give feedback to brands. I’ll let them know how my skin reacted, send pictures, and document the process. Did you know I don’t even share over half those products?! I try to ask myself a series of questions like: “Would someone buy this multiple times?” “Would I repurchase this?” “Can I think of three friends that would love this product?” “Has a reader e-mailed me for a product like this before?”

So it’s quite rare when I test a product and months before the launch I say, “Can I know the exact date this launches? I want to review it before it sells out.” Without this being a collaboration, I’m not necessarily privy to that information, but TULA was so kind to share the launch week with me. Because y’all, this has made such a difference in my hormonal acne issues. Let’s dig deeper.

I don’t know about you, but I get hormonal acne. I can’t take any hormonal medication, so it can be frustrating to try to fight something I know I’m going to get due to internal factors. I’ll get painful blemishes on my cheeks *each* cycle, and the pattern looks the same.

Breakout during cycle.
BATHE in acne cream to dry it out.
Peel the next week.
Left with pink spots from said blemish.
Use a bajillion creams to remove pink spot.
Cycle and blemish happens again.

Is this getting too TMI? I’m passionate about skincare, so forgive me! Being in my twenties, I don’t think this is slowing down anytime soon- and oh the irony of skincare in your twenties. You can wake up with a new fine line or a new blemish each day- you just never know. ha!

In comes the TULA Acne Clearing + Tone Correcting Gel. I’ve been learning about this product for over a year and photographed my very first cycle using this product. To make this a fair assessment, I kept everything else the same in my routine and photographed Day 1 of cycle.

Y’all, this is huge. The blemishes never got out of control. I never had peeling. I never had irritation. I never felt like my skin was in pain. Why is that? Because this is actually a healthy way to help with acne.

In the past year that I have been learning about the Tula Acne Gel {along with other acne-fighting ingredients on the market}, and I was informed that most ingredients on the market only work because they irritate.

This is the first ever FDA-approved OTC Acne treatment gel that is actually good for your skin! The probiotics are clinically proven to calm skin inflammation- which is the leading cause of acne. The probiotics then act to balance the good and bad bacteria in your skin, and at the end, they strengthen your skin barrier so it responds to the salicylic acid {the FDA approved acne fighter}. If you damage your skin barrier, it won’t respond well to products- whether that be retinol for anti-aging or serums for brightening. By using this acne gel daily, I am helping ward off future acne, fighting current, and healing my skin barrier from previous blemishes.

The Tula Acne Clearing + Tone Correcting Gel contains 2% salicylic acid, probiotics, azelaic acid to fade the pink marks left behind, willowherb & hyaluronic acid to naturally prevent the dryness and flakes. There is no alcohol, fragrance, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, Mineral Oil, Toxins, Dyes or Irritation. It is also 100% cruelty-free. 96% of testers saw an improvement in their skin in just the first 3 weeks. You can see in the photos above I saw a huge difference in just 2 with the Tula Acne Gel and no other changes!

If you suffer more intense acne, you would first use the Tula Purifying Cleanser, then treat with the Acne Clearing Gel and then finish with the Gel Moisturizer– or gel moisturizer of your choice!

You’ll pump the Tula Acne Gel into your hands and rub on your face, concentrating on the acne spots. You can have this product act in place of your toner, but y’all know I’m excessive so I treat it as a serum {You can do either!}. This is my day routine:

Face Wash, Tone, SK-II Essence, Eye Cream{testing a new one right now!}, Acne Serum, Vitamin C Serum, Moisturizer

My night routine is a whole other ballgame complete with masks and Glopro-ing and such. But I still keep those first steps the same:

Makeup Remover, Face Wash, Tone, Essence, Eye Cream, Acne Serumthen I either mask, use retinol, use oils, use moisturizer- it all depends on the day! {If I use my Sio sheets I do it after I use Essence.}

You can get the Acne Clearing Kit with the products I use {face wash, Tula acne gel, day moizturizer} for $95 when it is a $112 value. BUT you can actually get it for less with my discount code “Katey” at checkout. Your total will be $76, so you’re saving $36!

I feel like this was a mouthful, but what else is beauty boot camp for?! I’ve been receiving a lot of inquiries for personalized skincare routines {I totally get what works for me routine wise, may not work for you. I use COF to review and share my favorites!} and more posts on my up-to-date skincare routine. I feel like this is something that needs to be a video as it’s just easier to “chat” skincare. So we will see what comes from this, I tried to brainstorm yesterday how I can help the most in this realm. But I do hope this Tula Acne GEl helps anyone that suffers acne, whether it is hormonal like me or cystic or related to stress! If you have oilier skin, don’t worry. I’m sharing a few skincare and makeup recommendations for you on Friday, too!

Have a fabulous day, friends! I’m off to do my ridiculous skincare routine that I absolutely love! Let me know what you would prefer. More personalized skincare routines {dry skin, oily skin, under $100} OR a long video on skincare?!

P.S. My discount code “Katey” doesn’t work on auto-ship as that is already a discount. You have to click “one-time purchase” to get the 20% off my code gives you!

Oh my gosh!! I was HOPING you were going to do a post like this during your beauty boot camp week! I was fortunate to have clear skin as a teenager, and as soon as I hit my mid 20s I’ve also started to have random hormonal breakouts and have been desperately looking for a treatment.

Took your advice & ordered retinol yesterday and will be buying this today!!

  6. So appreciate your thorough review of this product! It sounds like it really worked well for you, and there are truly few things better than finding a product that makes you feel your absolute best. Plus, I am SO happy to see that TULA did not include fragrance in the product’s ingredients *insert praise hands*!!!

If your acne is primarily hormonal and you can’t take any hormonal medication, I highly HIGHLY recommend reading the book WomanCode by Alisa Vitti. It is about how to naturally balance your hormones and it completely changed my skin (and my life, frankly). I had AWFUL acne for over a decade, did every medication even Accutane and yet it persisted. After we suffered a miscarriage after over a year of trying (which I was convinced was due to a hormonal imbalance – never found out definitively but I am pretty sure), I finally read it and within three months my skin was 95% clear and I was pregnant again. I found her protocol to be very easy to implement and the results were phenomenal!

      Hi love!

Oh my gosh, ordering that NOW! I have been using essential oils and even am trying a gel for this {everything is SO out of order!} so that sounds amazing. I also love that you said about it being easy to implement because sometimes I get worried I wouldn’t be able to adapt to something. Thank you so much for sharing that with me!! xo, Katey

Thanks for this review! I haven’t been using any acne products since trying to get pregnant/being pregnant/nursing, so I would like to give this a try. I know you aren’t an OBGYN (:)) but are the ingredients in this product safe to use for women who are trying to get pregnant/are pregnant/nursing?

Hi Katie! Definitely skip this product if you are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant/nursing. You can use the beauty counter acne line if you are pregnant! xo, Katey

I would prefer a long video! Also, I read and reread the retinol post. I was so excited to see it because the prices were affordable compared to R+F and stuff at Sephora. I’ve only used it 7 weeks so I know I need to use it longer, but I think i’m seeing one sun spot lighten. Thanks so much for the recommendations!
